DALLAS (SMU) - Freshman Arthur Ivo scored his third goal of the season, but it was not enough, as the SMU men's soccer team fell to Conference USA heavyweight Kentucky, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field.
The Mustangs struck first just two minutes into the game, when junior forward Dane Saintus settled a high ball and dropped it to freshman midfielder Diogo de Almeida, who fired a crossing pass to the top of the penalty box. Ivo pounced on the loose ball and blasted a shot past Kentucky's Dan Williams to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats got the equalizer in the 17th minute, when forward Marco dos Santos fired a shot off SMU goalkeeper Craig Hill, and Chad Hagerty buried the rebound. Kentucky took the lead in the 45th minute when Stephen Beiro headed in a Sam Vernalls corner kick 40 seconds before halftime. The 2-1 halftime score held up through the end of the game, despite SMU outshooting UK, 6-5, in the second half (and 11-10 in the game) and having two second-half corner kicks to none for Kentucky.
The Mustangs will close out the regular season Friday night at Florida International, and then will host the Conference USA Tournament, Nov. 12-16, at Westcott Field.
