DALLAS (SMU)-SMU volleyball (13-14, 5-8 C-USA) fell in four sets (18-25, 20-25, 25-23, 20-25) to Rice (19-5, 10-3 C-USA) on Sunday in Moody Coliseum. In the loss, freshman Dana Powell matched her season-high 16 kills and recorded 11 digs. Sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson also had a double-double with 14 kills and 20 digs. Senior Stefanie Kons led the team in assists with 27.
The Mustangs trailed early in the fourth set, but rallied when junior Kendra Kahanek stuff blocked an Owl attack. A flurry of Mustang kills brought SMU within one, 13-14. Rice stepped up the offense recording a .333 hitting percentage for the set and taking the win.
SMU started off strong in the third set, taking the lead 6-3 off a Powell kill and forcing Rice to spend a time out. Powell ended the set with an impressive nine kills and .421 hitting efficiency. The Mustangs extended the lead 10-5 with a Kahanek/Powell stuff. Rice answered with two blocks in a row to pull within two, 15-13. SMU prevailed though, winning off a Kahanek kill.
To start off the second set, Kons assisted senior teammate Natalie Peters with a stuff. Rice took the lead 9-5, but the Mustangs rallied and pulled within two off a Wilkerson cross-court kill. Rice pulled away when Owl Jessica Holderness stepped up the attack, gathering seven kills.
In the first set, SMU attempted to contain Owl Asheleigh McCord, who had eight kills and ended with a .462 hitting percentage. Though the defense picked up three blocks and 18 digs, it wasn't enough as Rice went on to win the set.
The Mustangs return to action on Friday against Tulane in New Orleans, Louisiana at 7:00 p.m.
