DALLAS (SMU)--The SMU men's tennis team battled windy conditions Sunday afternoon, but downed Texas-Arlington at the Turpin Tennis Center. The Mustangs won every match en route to a 7-0 victory, improving their season record to 18-7.
SMU started by winning all three doubles matches to take the point. Oivind Alver and Chris Hooshyar were the first to finish, routing Brieuc Hamon and Nishant Hari 8-2 at No. 2. Alex Skrypko and Adolfo Solares followed at No. 3, beating Hugo Tarcido and Gonzalo Bienzobas, 8-6, clinching the doubles point for the Mustangs. At No. 1, David Kuczer and Robin Fahgen pulled off an 8-5 win over David Costa and Dmitry Minkin.
SMU carried a 1-0 advantage heading into singles. Hooshyar set things in motion for the Ponies, taking a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Hari at No. 6. Skrypko extended his winning streak to 11-straight and extended the Mustangs' lead by defeating Taracido in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. Oivind Alver picked up an efficient win at No. 4, downing Hamon, 6-1, 6-4.
Fahgen notched perhaps the most dominating win of the day, blanking Minkin at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. Kuczer finished just behind him at No. 1, downing Costa 6-1, 6-1.
The longest match of the afternoon was the battle at No. 5. Solares won his first set over Bienzobas, 6-4. In the second set, the two traded points and knotted the score several times, forcing the match into a tiebreaker. Solares outlasted his foe, overturning him 7-6 (5).
"We played very well today," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "I think our singles were particularly good. I'm excited about our match against TCU Wednesday and I'm glad to see the guys continue to play their best tennis."
The Mustangs will play their final regular-season match Wednesday, April 16, as they face cross-town rival TCU at 2pm in the Turpin Tennis Center. SMU will then host the Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships April 18-20.
