Women's Soccer Opens Season Saturday Against Oklahoma State

DALLAS (SMU) - The 2008 women's soccer season kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday night when the Mustangs host the Oklahoma State Cowgirls at Westcott Field. The game is the first of the season for each team.
The Mustangs are coming off a 9-7-1 season in 2007, which was Brent Erwin's first season as SMU's head coach. They are led by senior goalkeeper Ashley Gunter, a second-team All-America honoree as a sophomore, and a trio of veteran defenders: seniors Carley Phillips and Katie Leonard, and junior Kim Peabody. The Mustangs also will unveil one of the program's best recruiting classes as they welcome 17 freshmen to the team.
The Cowgirls arrive in Dallas after a 14-6-3 season a year ago, and are ranked No. 23 in the initial National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. OSU is led by midfielder Yolanda Odenyo, who is touted as an All-America candidate.
Each team won its only exhibition game. OSU dropped TCU, 3-1, while SMU shut out Baylor in Waco, 1-0.
