BERKELEY, CALIF. (SMU) - Senior forward Paulo da Silva scored his second goal of the season and junior goalkeeper Craig Hill notched his second shutout of the year Friday as the SMU men's soccer team shut out perennial power Stanford, 2-0, in the first round of the Cal Legacy Classic.

The Mustangs, who are ranked No. 7 in the nation in the current National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, now take on the host Cal Bears, who are ranked No. 8 in the nation by the NSCAA and are coached by former All-America SMU defender Kevin Grimes, Sunday afternoon.

The Mustangs, who outshot the Cardinal, 10-6, took advantage of a pair of Stanford miscues to get on the scoreboard early. Stanford gave SMU a 1-0 lead in the second minute of the game on an own goal, and then in the fourth minute, a Stanford foul gave SMU a penalty kick, which da Silva converted to provide the final margin.

Sunday's game against Cal pits two undefeated top-10 teams against each other. Like SMU, Cal improved to 3-0-0 Friday with a 5-0 win over Cornell. The Bears, which already have beaten then-No. 3 Maryland this season, have outscored their opponents, 9-1, so far this season.
