DALLAS (SMU)-SMU men's tennis (2-3) posted a win (6-1) over Lamar (2-2) in match competition on Saturday, February 7 at the Turpin Tennis Stadium, with two Mustangs extending their undefeated singles' records.
In doubles, sophomore pair Adham el-Effendi and Darren Walsh defeated Cardinals Horvath and Savkovich 8-5, while sophomore Artem Baradach and freshman David Costa also downed their Lamar opponents 8-5.
"We played our best doubles matches of the season today," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "Our pairs are improving steadily in competition and it is exciting to see the progression."
Junior leader Robin Fahgen is now 3-0 after dispersing Mario Janjic in straight sets (6-2, 7-5). Walsh defeated Lamar's Diego Snyder in a taxing straight set win, with both sets going into tie-breakers (7-5, 7-5).
Sophomore Bryan Griffin easily routed Savkovich, winning 6-2, 6-1. Costa was also successful in singles play, earning the win over Horvath (6-3, 6-2). Baradach took an easy first set win over Richard Filkulka, before fighting it out for the victory in a second set tie-breaker (6-3, 7-5). "I am really pleased to have everyone healthy and back on the court. This was a good win for us, and we hope to continue our success into tomorrow," said Neufeld.
The Mustangs return to Turpin Tennis Stadium on Sunday to take on the Privateers of New Orleans at 12:00 p.m.
