TULSA, Okla. - SMU's men's soccer fell 1-0 to No. 3 Akron Zips in the season opener in the Radisson Tulsa Airport Classic. Akron's Blair Gavin converted a penalty in the 56th minute for the game's only goal.
Both teams put two shots on goal, but the Zips were able to have the only tally in the defensive-minded game. Arthur Ivo led the Mustangs with two shots.
"Akron is a good team that can expose weaknesses in your team," said SMU head coach Tim McClements. "We performed well, especially as the game went on. Even though we lost, we still can take some positives from the game."
Four Mustangs made their debut tonight. T.J. Nelson received a start, and transfers Ian Kalis, Josue Soto, and Tate McMullen came on as substitutes.
The men return to the field on Sunday when they conclude the Radisson Tulsa Airport Classic against Seattle University at 1 p.m.
