SMU-Wisconsin Results
Madison, Wis. (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday, falling 4-0 to No. 25 Wisconsin, before beating UIC 6-1, at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison.
In the opener against the Badgers, Artem Baradach was having an outstanding match against No. 20 Marek Michalika before being called due to time restraints. At the time the match was called, Baradach was up one set, 7-6 (8-6), 6-5. It was the second time this year Baradach has had a match called due to time restraints. The other one came against Oral Roberts when the match was tied at one set apiece against Igor Sobolta. Other Mustangs to have their singles match called early were David Costa and Pablo Perez-Espanaola.
In the nightcap with the UIC Flames, SMU dominated from the outset, winning all three doubles matches to earn the point. Darren Walsh and Adham el-Effendi had the closest call, beating Sebastian Lystad and Nate Kirk by a razor thin margin 9-8. In singles play it was not as difficult for Walsh, beating Dave Robare, who was forced to retire due to injury after falling down 6-1 in the first set. Tobias Flood also had an impressive showing, beating Camilo Giraldo 6-0, 6-2.
"The top of our lineup with David Costa and Artem Baradach has been playing great," head coach Carl Neufeld said. "I've also been pleased with our doubles teams as evidenced by their play in these two matches."
SMU will return to action on Feb. 11 against Lamar. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
