HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team tied conference rival Marshall, 1-1, Saturday night at Sam Hood Field. Senior Arthur Ivo scored the lone goal for the Mustangs. With the draw, SMU moves to 6-4-1 on the season and now has a 1-1-1 mark in C-USA. Marshall is now 6-4-1 on the year and holds a 3-0-1 record in league play.
"It was a tough game," head coach Tim McClements said. "We developed a number of chances and were able to score early on. They came back and scored within a minute of the second half on a counterattack. The game was back-and-forth the whole time. We wish we would have won, but we're happy to come out with a point from a road game."
Ivo put the Mustangs on the board first with his third goal of the season in the seventh minute. Ivo scored directly on a free kick from 36 yards out, sending the ball over the Marshall goalkeeper in for a 1-0 SMU lead.
In the 46th minute, Marshall knotted the score at one when Anthony Virgara went in on a breakaway and slotted the ball past SMU keeper Jaime Ibarra and in.
Ibarra made four saves on the night for the Mustangs. SMU fired off eight shots on goal.
SMU finishes its three-game conference road trip on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at South Carolina at 6 p.m. The Gamecocks won the last meeting between the teams, 2-1, in the C-USA semifinals on Nov. 12. During the regular season, the Mustangs defeated the Gamecocks, 3-1, on Oct. 6 with goals from Ivo, Zach Barnes and Josue Soto.
