SMU vs. SOUTHERN MISS
The Mustangs hold a 3-1 all-time record against the Golden Eagles, outscoring Southern Miss 13-3. Last season, SMU defeated Southern Miss 3-1 in Hattiesburg, Miss., on October 22.
DE-KNIGHTED
In the Conference USA opener, SMU pulled off some heroics at Westcott Field on Sept. 23, unseating the defending C-USA regular-season champions and preseason favorite, No. 19 UCF Knights, 1-0 behind a goal by Kaitlyn Eidson in the 63rd minute. The central defender redirected a low, line-drive shot by Courtney Smith on a free kick outside of the Knights' penalty box. The win was the Mustangs first victory over a ranked opponent since November 15, 2002 when SMU knocked-off No. 11 Texas 2-1 in the first round the NCAA tournament.
HOME COOKIN'
The Mustangs are 4-0 this season at home, outscoring their opponents 9-1, while outshooting the two sides by a combined 66-31, and putting 21 more shots on frame. The defense has also produced shutouts against UTSA, Prairie View A&M and UCF.
SHARING THE WEALTH
SMU has scored 12 goals on the year, with seven different players finding the back of the, including one own goal. Mallory Baum, Rikki Clarke, Olivia Elliott and Kenzie Scovill are tied for the team lead with two goals.
SPIDER WEBB
In eight starts, goalkeeper Courtney Webb has recorded 25 saves, including three shutouts. The senior currently holds a 0.88 goals against average, which ranks fourth in among keepers in Conference USA.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Mustang newcomers have accounted for 13 of the team's 35 points, including five of the team's 11 goals. Freshmen Rikki Clarke and Olivia Elliot have tallied two goals apiece, while sophomore Amelia Ambrose has one goal on two shots. Freshman Briana Gaines has also picked up a pair of assists, while Clarke has recorded one.
MUSTANGS OUTRUN PANTHERS
SMU doubled its highest output of the season on Sept. 18, defeating Prairie View A&M 4-0. Up 1-0 after an eighth minute goal by Rikki Clarke, Olivia Elliott extended the lead to three as she notched the first and second goals of her Mustang career in a six-minute span during the second half. Kenzie Scovill added the final goal in the 82nd minute. SMU held a 35-1 shot advantage in the game.
UNLUCKY NUMBER 10
On the weekend of Sept. 9-11, the 10th minute of both matches was the difference as the Mustangs had a pair of 1-0 defeats in Los Angeles. All-American Sydney Leroux netted the game-winner for then-No. 6 UCLA in the Friday match, while a rebound off of a penalty kick by Brittney Sanford was the difference two days later at Loyola Marymount.
SMITH BLASTS SOONERS
In a tightly contested match on Aug. 28, sophomore defender Courtney Smith broke open the game in the 73rd minute with a strike from outside the top of the box after freshman Briana Gaines earned the Mustangs a free kick.
EIDSON NAMED ALL-CUSA
After earning back-to-back All-Conference USA Second Team selections, senior Kaitlyn Eidson was named to the Preseason All-CUSA Team voted on by the league's coaches. In 2010, the central defender led the team with five goals, while starting all 22 games and playing every minute (2,068) for the Mustangs.
NEXT GAME
SMU hosts Rice (6-2-1, 1-0-0) on Sept. 30 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. at Westcott Field. Last season, the Owls defeated the Mustangs 2-1 in overtime in Houston, Texas on Sept. 26. The Mustangs got revenge in the Conference USA tournament, getting past the Owls in penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals.
