SETTING THE SCENE
SMU is 2-2 after beating Colorado State and losing to No. 11 Baylor this past weekend. The Mustangs outshot the Rams 19-1 on their way to a 4-0 victory on Friday. SMU's 13 goals after its first three games are its most in an opening three games since 2003. Baylor shutout the Mustangs 2-0 on Sunday night in a closely-fought contest. The defeat was SMU's first loss at home since Oct. 16, 2011. SMU will have its first set of consecutive road games this week, with the team traveling to Davidson on Friday and South Carolina (who is 26th in the latest NSCAA poll) on Sunday. Freshman midfielder Taylor Barg leads the American with four assists, while Courtney Smith is second with three. SMU will return home to host in-state rival TCU on Sept. 12.
SMU ALL-TIME VS. DAVIDSON
The Mustangs and Wildcats have met just once, with SMU earning a 3-0 home win on Sept. 5, 2010. The win gave SMU a three-game unbeaten streak and a five-game winning streak in regular season games at Westcott. Current Mustangs Jessica Bartol and Shelby Redman each scored in the contest.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS
Davidson is 0-1-3 in its first four games, including three-straight scoreless draws. Davidson went 7-10-3 last season, good for sixth in the Southern Conference. Davidson's won the SoCon and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, where they lost in the opening round to South Carolina. Davidson is led by head coach Greg Ashton, who is 95-70-24 during his tenure at Davidson. The Wildcats have yet to score a goal in 2013, but Becca Fisher leads the team in shots with 15.
LAST MEETING: SMU ROLLS PAST DAVIDSON, 3-0 (Sept. 5, 2010)
The SMU women's soccer team beat Davidson 3-0 behind goals from Jessica Bartol, Kristin Medeiros and Shelby Redman.
Bartol, a freshman, opened the scoring with a shot from eight yards out in the 26th minute. The goal was the first of her collegiate career as well as the eventual game-winner.
Less than a minute later, senior midfielder Kristin Medeiros collected her first goal of the season when she headed in a corner kick from fellow senior Lauren Shepherd. In the 50th minute of play, Redman fired a shot from 30 yards out into the far corner of the net. It was her second goal of the season and second in as many games.
The victory was goalkeeper Courtney Webb's third of the season and third shutout. Webb now holds a 0.57 goals-against average on the year.
Davidson's best scoring chance came in the 64th minute. With Webb out of the net after denying Davidson's initial opportunity, defender Katherine Cox stepped in and stopped a shot from five yards out, preserving the shutout for the Mustangs.
SMU ALL-TIME VS. SOUTH CAROLINA
This match marks the first meeting between the two programs. SMU will play a total of seven teams for the first time this season - Colorado State, DePaul, ULM, Louisville, South Carolina, Temple and USF. The Mustangs are currently 2-0 against first-time opponents in 2013 after defeating ULM on Aug. 23 and Colorado State on Aug. 30.
ABOUT THE GAMECOCKS
South Carolina is 3-0-1 to start the season, and received 62 votes in the latest NSCAA poll, six votes short of ranking in the top 25. The Gamecocks are ranked third in the South region. South Carolina has yet to concede a goal in 2013, including a 1-0 shutout upset of No. 7 Duke at home on Aug. 25. South Carolina will play at Clemson on Friday.
LOOKING AHEAD
After returning from their road trip in the Carolinas, SMU will play three straight home games, starting with rival TCU on Sept. 12. SMU will host Sam Houston State (Sept. 16) and Depaul (Sept. 19) before beginning conference play in the program's inaugural season as a member of the American Athletic Conference.
THE 350 CLUB
SMU Head Coach Chris Petrucelli earned his 350th career win the Mustangs' 6-1 victory over ULM at Westcott Field on Aug. 23. Petrucelli became just the 16th coach in NCAA women's soccer history to total 350 wins. He also ranks ninth among Division I coaches all-time. His career record is now 351-120-40 (.727), including a 199-33-16 (.835) record in home games.
LOOKING FOR #200 AT HOME
The Mustangs are currently sitting at 198 total home wins since the program began in 1986. The earliest that the Mustangs could reach 200 would be Sept. 16 when SMU hosts Sam Houston State. SMU is 198-53-17 (.771) on the Hilltop.
DEPTH OF ATTACK
SMU scored 12 goals in its first three games, the most since totaling the same amount in 2003. Those 12 goals have come from eight players, including four players who have scored their first collegiate goals. Kelsey Gorney and Taylor Jackson, both freshmen, along with Gabrielle Petrucelli and Daphe De Leener tallied their first goals during the first three games. Shelby Redman leads SMU with three goals, with Gorney and Jackson following with two each.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE RELEASES PRESEASON POLL, REDMAN EARNS PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
SMU was pegged to finish seventh in the inaugural American Athletic Conference preseason poll, the league announced Friday. SMU forward Shelby Redman was selected by the league's coaches to the American Athletic Conference Preseason Team.
The regular season opens with a home match against ULM on Aug. 23. SMU is coming off a 9-8-4 season, including an undefeated 5-0-3 record at Westcott Field and an appearance in the Conference USA semifinals.
UCF and Louisville tied for first place in the poll. The Knights and the Cardinals each earned 85 points. Rutgers redshirt senior Jonelle Filigno earned Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honors, while UCF senior Marissa Diggs was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and UCF senior Lianne Maldonado was named Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
The American Athletic Conference, based in Providence, R.I., rebranded July 1, 2013. In its inaugural year, The American is fortunate to be able to draw from the previous successes and traditions already established in its 10 inaugural women's soccer programs. The state-of-the-art UCF Soccer and Track Complex will host the first American Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Nov. 8 (semifinals) and 10 (final). First-round and quarterfinal games will be held at campus sites on Oct. 31 and Nov. 3.

Three Mustangs received Preseason First Team All-Conference recognition from CollegeSportsMadness.com.
Rikki Clarke, a junior midfielder, was fourth on the team in points last season with 12. She scored the game-winning goals in SMU's win over No. 8 UCF on Oct. 7 and in the team's first round win over Rice in the Conference USA Tournament. Clarke received Second Team All-C-USA honors and made the All-Tournament team.
Shelby Redman, a junior forward, tied for the team lead in goals with nine, good for fourth in the C-USA. Redman led the Mustangs with 25 points, which tied for the third-highest total in the C-USA. The Austin, Texas native also made the Second Team All-C-USA squad.
Courtney Smith, a senior defender, led SMU with 10 assists, tying for the C-USA lead and ranking 20th in the NCAA in that category. Smith started all 21 games and earned Third Team All-C-USA recognition.
