Getting To Know Women's Soccer: Kat Wood

DALLAS (SMU) - Freshman Kat Wood brings an all-around skill set to the Mustangs in her first season on the Hilltop.
Wood, a native of Castle Pines, Colorado, always knew she wanted to come to SMU.
"I really liked the team when I first got here, I loved the school and it was always on my top list to go here, even if I didn't play," Wood said. "It's a really good academic school as well as a really good soccer program. It encompassed everything I wanted."
Wood made her Mustang debut in the first match of the season against Saint Louis on Aug. 21.
"When I went in my first game against SLU, getting that experience for the first time, that was a big moment," Wood said.
The freshman uses her skill set all around the pitch, filling in at any position when needed.
"I'm a versatile player, I can play anywhere which helps with practice because I can fill voids," Wood said.
Wood came to the Mustangs as a three-star prospect and played on the same club team as fellow Mustang freshman, Haley Thompson. She said the level of difficulty is vastly different in college, but she has adapted well.
"You can't get away with anything in college soccer," Wood said. "It's definitely a different intensity, and that it's been a good transition for me picking up the speed of play and all that."
Wood has one superstition that helps her refocus when she's out on the field.
"When I think I'm playing bad or when I get in my head, I grab my shirt and wipe my face and kind of start over," Wood said.
Her favorite professional athlete is U.S. Women's National Team member and World Cup Champion, Alex Morgan. Off the pitch, Wood enjoys spending time outdoors.
"I love hiking, being outside and playing with dogs and going on adventures," Wood said.
She plans to major in finance or accounting and wants to work for an accounting firm upon graduating from SMU.
