NIGHT ONE FINAL RESULTS | DAY ONE PRELIM RESULTS
GREENSBORO, N.C. (SMU) -- The SMU 400-yard medley relay team picked up All-America honors on night one of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Mustangs placed fifth in the Consolation Final of the event with a time of 3:33.67.
"To come here and qualify is a huge accomplishment, and then to come and have a day like we had today, with swimmers stepping up and doing their best times going faster than we have throughout the season, is really impressive," Head Coach Steve Collins said. "On top of that, to make it into the finals is just fantastic, I couldn't be happier."
Seniors Isabella Arcila and Nathalie Lindborg, along with sophomores Marne Erasmus and Tara-Lynn Nicholas made up the Mustang relay, which gave SMU back-to-back honors in the event following an 11th-place finish in 2014. The time was also good for third in program history.
Arcila led off the group with a 53.26 split in the back, and was followed up by Nicholas at 1:00.33 in the breast. Erasmus went 51.60 in the fly and Lindborg closed out the group with a 48.48 in the free.
Arcila also competed in the 50-yard freestyle posting a 22.15 to break her own school record of 22.21, which she posted at the American Athletic Conference Championship at the same pool. The time was good for a 17th-place finish, making her the first alternate for finals.
"To break her school record again, in the prelims, was just a great accomplishment," Collins said.
Lindborg also competed in the event clocking in at 22.67.
"Nata [Lindborg] was just awesome," Collins added. "She had two races in both the medley relays that were faster than she'd ever done. So I was extremely proud of her for that."
SMU competed in the day's other relay, the 200-yard freestyle, but did not advance to the event finals.
In the team standings, SMU sits 24th with eight points. The top three feature first-place Georgia, California in second and Stanford rounding out the group.
"We have to take it one race at a time," Collins added. "First is the short medley relay, and after tonight's performance I'm hoping that we'll have another chance to be in the finals in that, and we've got two breaststrokers, a backstroker and one in the fly so we've got a lot of opportunities."
The Mustangs are back in action for day two of the Championship and will compete in the 200-yard medley relay (Arcila, Nicholas, Erasmus, Lindborg), 100-yard butterfly (Erasmus), 100-yard breaststroke (Nicholas, Rachel Nicol) and 100-yard backstroke (Arcila).
