Mustangs Drop League Match To No. 22 USF, 4-1

DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs lost to American Athletic Conference foe and 22nd-ranked USF, 4-3, on Friday at the Turpin Stadium in the Brookshire Family Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex.
Freshman Samm Butler collected the lone point for 39th-ranked SMU (17-7) on Friday, winning his match at No. 3 singles over Sasha Gozun, 6-3, 6-2. His win tied the match at 1-1 at the time, but USF (14-5) quickly rebounded, closing out matches on courts 1, 4 and 5. SMU sophomore Markus Kerner fought hard against No. 20 Roberto Cid on court 1, taking the Bulls' top-ranked player to the wire in the first set before falling 7-6 (1). Cid then clinched the victory for USF with a 6-1 win in set 2.
SMU junior Nate Lammons and sophomore Arkadijs Slobodkins got the Mustangs off to a quick start in doubles action, winning their match at No. 2 by a score of 6-2 over Gozun and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy. The Mustangs were up on both courts 1 and 3 in doubles as well, but USF rallied back. The Bulls took the match on court 3 to even doubles up, and then won at No. 1 in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2).
Butler's singles win boosted his record to 18-3 this spring, the best mark on the team. Lammons and Slobodkins improved to 13-1 in doubles in 2015, also the best record on the squad.
SMU will be back in action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT as it hosts crosstown rival and 10th-ranked TCU at the SMU Tennis Complex.
