STORRS, Conn. -- SMU field performers Rayann Chin and Lucija Cvitanovic both repeated as conference champions on Friday at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship in Storrs, Connecticut.
Chin won the discus for the second consecutive year with a stadium-record throw of 50.58 meters, while Cvitanovic earned back-to-back heptathlon titles with 5,427 points. Overall, SMU sits in second place with 36 points, two points behind leader Memphis.
"Day two was awesome. We ended up with two individual champions," said head coach Dave Wollman. "Lucija came back and had a real gutsy 800 performance to win her title back. She's had a great weekend and she still has a lot ahead of her. Rayann then won her second consecutive title and had three of the farthest throws in the competition, so it was a complete domination on her part."
Tochi Nlemchi and Jacquetta Cannon also competed in the discus for SMU. Nlemchi earned points, finishing seventh (44.74m), and Cannon placed 14th (38.42m).
In track events, Holly Archer advanced to the 800-meter final after running a new PR (2:10.59) in her preliminary heat. In the 400-meter hurdles, Anna Novosadova also ran a new PR (1:04.86), but just missed the cut for the final.
"Holly's personal best in the 800 bodes well for the rest of her weekend," said Wollman. "And, although she didn't make the finals, Anna's performance was great as well. For a freshman to come in and run a PR at the conference championship, that bodes well for her future."
Stephanie Kalu also competed on Thursday, finishing 11th (24.05) in 200-meter prelims. She did not qualify for the finals.
The meet resumes tomorrow with finals in the javelin, long jump and 3,000-meter steeplechase. For more information on the conference championship, visit The American's website.
