Nine Mustangs Qualify For NCAA West Regional

DALLAS -- Nine SMU track & field performers are set to compete in the NCAA West Regional May 28-30 at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. 

The top 48 performers in each individual event and the top 24 relay teams qualified for regionals.  The top 12 performers at the regional then qualify for the NCAA Championship June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.  Live video and results will be provided.  Visit the Meet Headquarters page for links. 

The regional begins on Thursday with Stephanie Kalu competing in the first round of the 100-meter and Isabella Marten in the long jump. 

On Friday, Kalu is slated to compete in the 100-meter quarterfinals and the first round of the 200-meter.  Karoline Skatteboe will also compete on Friday, running in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. 

Saturday marks the busiest day for SMU with Kalu running in 200-meter quarterfinals and Kalu, Rachel Scruggs, Craishia Washington and Shahira Ehiemua competing in the 4x100 relay.  In field events, Isabella Marten competes in the triple jump, Lucija Cvitanovic in the javelin and Tochi Nlemchi and Rayann Chin in the shot put.

Rayann Chin | Senior | Shot Put
Chin, a senior, qualified for the fourth time in her career, but for the first time in the shot put.  The Canada native qualified in the discus the last three years.  Her best finish at the regional came last year, where she finished 22nd in the discus.  Chin currently ranks 40th in the West Region with a throw of 15.28 meters.  Her personal best is 15.44 meters. 

Lucija Cvitanovic | Junior | Javelin
Cvitanovic, a junior, looks to qualify for the NCAA Championship for the third consecutive year.  The Croatia native advanced to nationals in the javelin as a freshman and in the heptathlon as a sophomore. This year, Cvitanovic is competing in the javelin at the regional for the third straight year.  Her best finish came as a freshman, when she finished third.  Cvitanovic went on to earn Second Team All-American honors in the javelin, finishing 14th at the NCAA Championship.  She enters the competition seeded 28th with a season-best throw of 46.92 meters.  Her PR is 50.73 meters. 

Shahira Ehiemua | Junior | 4x100 relay
Ehiemua, a junior, is a member of the 4x100 relay team (Kalu, Washington, Scruggs) that qualified 10th with a time of 44.75, set at the American Athletic Conference Championship.  Ehiemua ran the third leg of that relay.  Her personal record in the 100-meter is 12.02. 

Stephanie Kalu | Senior | 100, 200, 4x100 relay
Kalu, a senior, qualified for three events at the regional.  For the third straight year, Kalu qualified in the 100-meter.  She is seeded 11th with a time of 11.34.  In 2013, as a sophomore, Kalu finished eighth at the regional in the 100-meter, qualifying for the NCAA Championship, where she placed 22nd and earned Honorable Mention All-American honors.   Kalu also qualified in the 200-meter and is seeded 24th with a time of 23.57.  She is also on a member of the 4x100 relay team. 

Isabella Marten | Freshman | Triple Jump, Long Jump
Marten, a freshman, qualified in both the triple jump and long jump.  Marten is seeded 35th in the long jump (6.07m) and third in the triple jump (13.21m).  At The American Championship, she finished third in the triple and fourth in the long. 

Tochi Nlemchi | Sophomore | Shot Put
Nlemchi, a sophomore, qualified in the shot put for the second consecutive year.  Nlemchi is seeded 30th with a throw of 15.63 meters.  At The American Championship, Nlemchi finished second in the shot with the throw of 15.63 meters.   

Rachel Scruggs | Junior | 4x100 relay
Scruggs, a junior, is a member of the 4x100 relay team (Kalu, Washington, Scruggs) that qualified 10th with a time of 44.75, set at the American Athletic Conference Championship.  Ehiemua ran the first leg of that relay.  Scruggs also qualified for the regional in 2013 in the 4x100 relay. 

Karoline Skatteboe | Junior | 3000m Steeple
Skatteboe, a junior, qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, marking the second time she has qualified for the regional.  Skatteboe competed in the 10k at the regional in 2013, finishing 36th.  Skatteboe is seeded 29th in the steeple with a time (10:27.64).  She also won the steeple at The American Championship in 10:37.36.

Craishia Washington | Senior | 4x100 relay
Washington, a senior, is a member of the 4x100 relay team (Kalu, Ehiemua, Scruggs) that qualified 10th with a time of 44.75, set at the American Athletic Conference Championship.  Washington anchored that relay team.  In addition, Washington also finished fourth in the 100-meter at The American Championship with a new PR time (11.77).  This marks the third time she has qualified for the regional, also qualifying in 2012 (200m) and 2013 (4x100 relay).
