DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Women's Soccer Play of the Week goes to Claire Oates' all-around skill set in a 3-0 victory over Northwestern State.
Oates, the 2014 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, has carried over her strong play from a season ago. The sophomore has contributed, not only on the scoresheet, but as a true midfielder, providing help on defense and using her skill on the ball to hold possession.
Against Northwestern State, Oates made several plays that helped the Mustangs. She stifled an attempt at a counterattack by the Lady Demons by making a sliding play on the ball to keep the pass from going through.
Oates also showed off her technical ability, holding possession and using outstanding footwork to weave through the Northwestern State defense. Her goal in the first half was all the Mustangs needed against the Lady Demons, and it was her third headed goal of the season.
Oates has three goals and one assist on the season, and is second on the team in total shots (17).
