Getting To Know Women's Soccer: Shelby Brown

DALLAS (SMU) - Mustang midfielder Shelby Brown has relished her opportunity to play for SMU and makes the most of it when she gets on the field.
Brown, a native of Newport Beach, California, saw her first action as a Mustang against Saint Louis on Aug. 21 and recorded her first shot on goal against Northwestern State on Sept. 13. The freshman said it was a thrill to enter the field for the first time in a collegiate soccer game.
"It was exciting, but I was definitely nervous," Brown said. "It's a lot faster pace, and it's a different style of play."
Brown was a team captain on her high school team, Corona Del Mar, and was the Newport-Mesa Player of the Year in her junior season. She chose SMU because it was the perfect fit for her.
"I think it's a good balance of soccer program and academics," Brown said. "It's just all around a really good school."
The midfielder models her game after her favorite soccer player, Lionel Messi, who practiced with the Argentine National Team at Westcott Field earlier this month. The women's soccer team was able to watch them practice and Brown was impressed by his play.
"It was really cool, he plays so clean and calm," Brown said.
Off the pitch, the California native likes to go to the beach and be outdoors. Although she has yet to decide on her major at SMU, she has a positive outlook on what the future brings.
"Not sure yet, but probably advertising," Brown said. "I want to find a job that I will be happy doing."
Brown and the Mustangs will begin American Athletic Conference play on Thursday when they face Cincinnati at 7 p.m. CT at Westcott Field. For tickets, go to smumustangs.com/tickets.
