Jacob Speed Selected By FC Dallas in MLS SuperDraft

Jan. 19, 2016

BALTIMORE (DALLAS/SMU) – SMU men's soccer player Jacob Speed was selected by FC Dallas with the 17th pick in the fourth round (78th overall) of Major League Soccer's SuperDraft on Tuesday.

Speed, a Mansfield, Texas, native, was named to the 2015 NSCAA Division I All-East Region Second Team. He anchored the Mustang defense that led the American Athletic Conference in shutouts (9) and ranked No. 3 in goals against average (.99). Speed started every game in back for SMU and registered two assists.

"We are very proud of Jacob," Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. "He has worked tremendously hard to develop into the player he is today. Anytime an SMU student-athlete is drafted it's a special day for our program. We know Jacob will represent himself, the SMU soccer family and the university well with FC Dallas."

The senior defender helped lead the Mustangs to an overall record of 15-3-4, an AAC regular season title and an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance, the 30th appearance in school history.

In his career at SMU, Speed played in 46 matches, starting 41 of those games and registered a total of 5,584 minutes.

Speed will join FC Dallas for preseason training camp, which begins later this week in Frisco.
