DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 5 SMU equestrian team closed out the fall season with a 12-6 victory over Delaware State Saturday at the Dallas Equestrian Center. The Mustangs won three-of-four disciplines, and swept the MOP honors, en route to its third victory of the year.
"I am excited to take home a win, in one of the best fall seasons in program history," SMU head coach
Carol Gwin said. "We always enjoy competing against Delaware State because their team and coaches are of such high quality."
Both the western and hunt seat teams were dominant, outscoring the Hornets, 6-3.
In reining, the Mustangs posted a 3-1 victory.
Keagan Snively led off the event and won her first MOP of the season, with a 71-64 victory over Monica Ellis.
Casey Bibbs edged Aubrey Braham, 69.5-68.5, for the second point, before sophomore
Olivia Pakula won the discipline for the Mustangs with a 68-66 victory over Shelbe Jarrett.
"The reiners rode outstanding today," Gwin added. "The group really provided the spark that we were looking for today, and I am really excited with the way the group ended the semester."
SMU topped the Hornets in horsemanship, 3-2.
Michaela Dinger bested Jarrett, 74-63.5, en route to her first collegiate MOP honor. Junior-transfer
Keaton Crawford notched the second point for the Mustangs with a 73.5-68 victory over Angelina Watts. Senior
Hannah McCain made SMU history, posting a 76.5, the highest western score in program history. McCain had little trouble clinching the discipline, knocking off Abigail Buckwalter, 76.5-71.5.
SMU won Equitation on the Flat, 4-0. Senior
Leina King defeated Sofia Zingale, 76-71, before sophomore
Nora Gray beat Molly Gara, 80-66.
Vivian Yowan clinched the discipline win with an 81-78 decision over Hayley Anderson.
Haley Zimmerman won her first collegiate MOP, and claimed the fourth point with an 82-77 win over Vanessa Rabito.
In Equitation over Fences, the Mustangs claimed two points. Yowan won her second MOP of the season with a 78-70 victory over Alex Gill.
Alexis Graves posted a 69-65 win over Rachel Dantley.
The SMU equestrian team will return to action in 2017, hosting Texas A&M, Sat., Feb. 4. It is slated for 10 a.m.
