Oates Named to NSCAA All-Northeast Region Third Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (SMU/NSCAA) – Midfielder Claire Oates was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Northeast Region Third Team. The junior earned her first all-region nod after finishing tied for first on the team with 10 goals, including a team-high six game-winning goals.
Oates' 10 goals are ranked tied for seventh in the American Athletic Conference, while her six game-winners are ninth in the NCAA and tied for second in The American. The six game-winning goals are the second most in program history since 1996, behind only Kim Harvey who scored nine in 2003.
The Long Beach, Calif., native tallied two goals in the American Athletic Conference Championship, including the game-winner that sent the Mustangs to their first conference championship match since 2004. She was named to The American All-Tournament team following her performances.
Oates also earned a spot on the All-American Athletic Conference Second Team. She was named the AAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19 after scoring two game-winning goals to lift the Mustangs over Saint Louis and [RV] Washington.
Oates finished the season with 20 points, trailing only Vanessa Valadez (26) and Allie Thornton (23).
She started all 22 games for the Mustangs in 2016, and has started all 61 games since she arrived on the Hilltop. She has 20 career goals.
