THIS WEEK: A split squad will represent SMU at the Bobcat Classic in San Marcos, Texas, Friday and Saturday. The Mustangs are slated to compete only in throwing events: discus, hammer throw and shotput. Discus will take place Friday at 3 p.m., while the hammer throw and shotput take place Saturday.
PROBABLES:
Discus: Daniella Murchison, Tochi Nlemchi
Hammer Throw: Kennedy Godsey, Daniella Murchison
Shotput: Jacquetta Cannon, Tochi Nlemchi LAST TIME OUT: The SMU track and field runners earned five top-five finishes Saturday at the Michael Johnson Invitational at the Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium. Karoline Skatteboe earned first-place honors, while Shanoah Souza earned runner-up honors in the 3000m Steeplechase. Skatteboe, a Jar, Norway, native, claimed the only Mustang victory on the day, needing only 10:37.88 to take top honors. Fellow senior Souza posted a 10:58.29 time to secure second place. In the 1500m run, Holly Archer ran a 4:24.08 to earn a third-place finish. In the 100m dash, freshman Latessa Johnson and senior Craishia Washington each earned top-five finishes. Johnson, a Dallas native, ran an 11.58 to claim fourth, while Washington finished fifth with an 11.69.
LEADING THE PACK: The Mustangs continue to show their dominance in the American Athletic Conference, boasting 11 top-five student-athletes in nine events, with five leading their respective events. On the track, Latessa Johnson is No. 1 in the conference in both the 100m and 200m dashes, while Karoline Skatteboe leads in the 3000m steeplechase. In field events, Tochi Nlemchi sits atop the conference in the shotput. Senior Lucija Cvitanovic is No. 1 in the AAC in the heptathlon.
Cathy Casey AT THE HELM: Cathy Casey was named the track and field head coach in June 2015 after longtime coach Dave Wollman stepped down. Casey is no stranger to SMU, as she enters her 15th year on the Hilltop. In 2005, she was named the cross country head coach, while also serving as an assistant track and field coach, overseeing the middle- and long-distance corps. Last year, SMU repeated as American Athletic Conference Outdoor Champions, with Casey's distance crew playing a key role in the team's success. The Mustangs swept the 3,000m steeplechase (Karoline Skatteboe, 1st; Shanoah Souza, 2nd; Agnes Sjostrom, 3rd) and had medalists in two other distance events (Souza, 3rd, 5,000m; Caitlin Keen, 3rd; 10,000m).
UP NEXT: Following the Bobcat Classic, the Mustangs will travel to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the American Athletic Conference Championships. The Mustangs have earned a podium-finish in four of the last five years, including back-to-back titles the last two seasons.
