EUGENE, Ore. (SMU) -- SMU senior
Lucija Cvitanovic is in 22nd place after four events in the heptathlon at the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Cvitanovic scored 3,103 points on day one.
The day opened with the 100m hurdles, where Cvitanovic clocked a 14.68 to finish fourth in the opening heat and 23rd overall in the discipline. The mark is the seventh-fastest in school history and good enough for 884 points.
The senior opened the shot put with a season-best 11.83-meter (38-9¾) hurl to earn 650 points. Cvitanovic finished third in flight one and 14th overall.
In the high jump, the Zagreb, Croatia, native, earned 806 points after clearing 1.66-meters (5-5¼). The senior had little trouble passing the 1.57m mark, clearing the bar on her first attempt. On both the 1.60- and 1.63-meter heights, she advanced on her second attempts, respectively. She finished 11th in flight two and 17th overall. In the 200m, Cvitanovic finished with a 26.39.
Akela Jones of Kansas State leads the heptathlon after one day with 3,951 points. The SMU senior is 848 points behind the leader and 416 points behind the last scoring position at eighth.
Cvitanovic wraps up the heptathlon Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800m. The day begins at 1:30 p.m. CT/11:30 PT.
