DALLAS (SMU) – SMU continues to make its presence felt on the court as three Mustangs competed at the 2016 ITA Summer Circuit this weekend.
Liza Buss and Sarai Monarrez participated in both women's open singles and teamed up in doubles play. The two combined to go 9-2 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.
The Iowa State transfer got off to a great start as she won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 64. She then continued her dominance in the upcoming rounds as she defeated Alahna Reto (Florida Tech), 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32. Buss then made quick work of Kelsey Grambeau (Wisconsin), 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16 to record her third-consecutive straight sets victory.
In the quarterfinal, Buss won in straight sets again, 7-5, 6-2, to move on to the semifinals.
The sophomore continued her winning ways after securing a victory against Tai Martin (Charlotte), 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the finals where she fell to Millie Nichols, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Monarrez easily got through the first two rounds after she registered a 6-1, 6-3, victory in the round of 64 and a 6-0, 6-2, win in the round of 32. She then defeated Melissa Pick (Wisconsin) in straight sets, 7-6 (7), 6-2, in the round of 16.
The Monterrey, Mexico, native also was impressive in the quarterfinal after a 7-5, 6-2, victory against Natasha Gonzalez (Harvard). In the semifinals, the incoming freshman would fall to Nichols, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles play, the Mustang duo of Buss and Monarrez received a bye from the round of 32 into the round of 16, where they earned an 8-4 victory.
Buss and Monarrez carried their momentum into the quarterfinals with an 8-0 victory before falling, 8-5, in the semifinals to the fifth-seeded team.
While Buss and Monarrez were competing at the University of Texas at Dallas, teammate
Mary Wright took part in ITA Summer Circuit at the University of Colorado.
The senior earned a bye from the round of 32 into the round of 16, where she fell to Lindsay Harlas (New Mexico State), 6-4, 6-7 (2), 1-0 (8).
