LAST SEASON VS. HOUSTON (L, 71-68 at Hofheinz Pavilion on Feb. 1, 2016): HOUSTON (AP) -- Devonta Pollard scored 23 points and Damyean Dotson added 13 as Houston rallied for a 71-68 victory over No. 12 SMU. Pollard and Dotson keyed a 21-4 run midway through the second half for the Cougars (16-6, 6-4).

Nic Moore scored five straight points and
Ben Moore cut the lead to 66-65 with two free throws with 2 minutes left. Following a free throw by Galen Robinson, Jr.,
Nic Moore and Dotson traded missed shots, and Kennedy was called for an offensive foul with 59 seconds left. Pollard made two free throws with 46 seconds left to push the lead to 69-65, and
Nic Moore's 3-pointer was blocked by Robinson. Bertrand Nkali made a free throw with 26 seconds left, but
Nic Moore hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to cut the lead to two. Wes VanBeck hit one free throw with 14 seconds left, and
Jordan Tolbert's 3-point attempt missed and
Shake Milton could not get a 3-point attempt off in time. Trailing 49-38 with just under 16 minutes remaining, Houston responded with the 21-4 run over the next 8 minutes led by nine points from Pollard and seven from Dotson. LeRon Barnes and Pollard capped the run with consecutive 3-pointers to give the Cougars their largest lead of the game, 59-53. The Mustangs went 1 of 11 from the field during the run and went 6:07 without scoring. SMU opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt to open up a 47-36 lead on a 3-pointer by Milton with 17:26 remaining. Milton added 10 points and
Jarrey Foster had nine. SMU hit 20 of 23 from the free throw line. (W, 77-73 at Moody Coliseum on Jan. 19, 2016): DALLAS (AP) --
Nic Moore scored 23 points as the eighth-ranked Mustangs remained Division I's only undefeated team with a 77-73 victory over Houston.
Markus Kennedy had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and his two free throws with 5:35 left broke the game's 12th and final tie to put the Mustangs (18-0, 7-0) ahead to stay. Kennedy's tip-in a minute earlier tied the game and was part of an 8-0 spurt. Moore then had consecutive baskets before missing two in a row -- one tipped in by
Sterling Brown and the other followed by
Ben Moore to make it 67-64. Damyean Dotson was on the 3-point line for a long jumper that got the Cougars (13-5, 3-3) within a point before
Nic Moore's pass to Brown for a 3-pointer. Dotson had 16 points to lead the Cougars, who lost their third straight game after a 13-2 start. Danrad Knowles had 14 points and Galen Robinson Jr. had 11.
Sterling Brown had 15 points for SMU, and
Ben Moore had 10. Houston led for more than 15 1/2 minutes of the first half, and was up by eight after Robinson's layup with 3:02 left. But the Cougars didn't score again before halftime.
Nic Moore tied the game at 34-all with a jumper after dribbling out much of the final 30 seconds of the half. That was set up by Kennedy's rebound that ended a possession when the Cougars missed two 3s and the front end of a bonus. Moore's jumper with 2:48 left had started the half-ending run.
THE SERIES VS. UCF (8-6^): SMU and UCF will meet for the 15th time. SMU expanded its winning streak over UCF with an 88-73 win on Jan. 10, 2016 in the only game between the two teams last season. The series started in 2005 when the two schools were members of Conference USA. The Mustangs are 2-4^ against UCF in Orlando. (^6-6 officially all-time, 1-4 away; wins in 2013-14 later vacated)
LAST SEASON VS. UCF (W, 88-73 at Moody Coliseum on Jan. 10, 2016): DALLAS (AP) --
Ben Moore had a career-high 23 points,
Nic Moore added 20 and short-handed No. 15 SMU is still undefeated after an 88-73 victory over UCF. SMU (15-0, 4-0) took control with an early 15-0 run that included a 57-second span with three 3-pointers. The first of those 3s was an alley-oop that actually went through the hoop, though the Mustangs did have five dunks by halftime -- and three more after that. Justin McBride had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead UCF (8-6, 2-1), while Matt Williams had 12 points and A.J. Davis 10.
Jordan Tolbert had 19 points and
Sterling Brown 13 for the Mustangs, who maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game after scoring their 15 consecutive points in just over 2 1/2 minutes. The final points in that run were those three consecutive 3s. Brown was attempting an alley-oop pass to Tolbert, who was in the air but got his hands out of the way and grabbing the rim only after the ball went through for a 3-pointer instead with 15:26 left in the first half. Brown then made a more conventional 3 before
Nic Moore's shot from long range put the Mustangs up 22-8 with 14:29 left in the first half. The Knights missed 11 consecutive shots over more than 6 minutes in the first half, which included the span of SMU's big run. UCF has lost its last five games against the Mustangs.
