DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team faces its first road test as the Mustangs plays at Oklahoma Sunday at 11 a.m. CT at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Mustangs and Sooners will meet for the third consecutive season and the seventh all-time. SMU recorded its first victory in the series last season with a 4-3 win at home.
LAST MATCH: (W, 6-1 vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Feb. 15)
After more than a week off from competition, the SMU women's tennis team looked sharp as the Mustangs snapped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 25-match regular season winning streak with a 6-1 victory at Turpin Stadium. The Islanders fell to 4-1 on the season after entering the contest with the nation longest regular season winning streak. The Mustangs improved to 6-0 in dual matches this season and won their fourth match of the year against Southland Conference opponents. SMU now holds an 8-1 all-time record against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
SCOUTING OKLAHOMA
Oklahoma is 3-1 this season with its only loss coming on the road at Arkansas. The Sooners have defeated UTEP, North Texas and Wisconsin at home. OU will face Tulsa at home Saturday before hosting SMU on Sunday.
The Sooners finished 9-14 overall and 3-6 in the Big 12 last season. 12 of Oklahoma's 14 losses were against ranked opponents.
Oklahoma boasts one of the top players in singles in the country in junior Lily Miyazaki. The Tokyo, Japan, native currently ranks No. 16 in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Singles Rankings. Miyazaki is 2-2 on the season.
SERIES HISTORY:
SMU earned its first victory in the series (1-5) last season with a 4-3 win against then-No. 36 Oklahoma in Dallas. The Sooners won the first five in the series dating back to 1998.
The Mustangs faced the Sooners in the fall at the OU Invite (Sept. 30-Oct. 2). Liza Buss led SMU with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Serena Nash on the final day to win the flight one singles title. Mary Wright defeated Ann Pepper in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

2017 OUTLOOK:
SMU will be led by seniors Mary Wright, Macie Elliott and Dasha Sharapova after the graduation of all-conference performers Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Hristina Dishkova.
Gyulai has added a talented group of newcomers to the roster, including Charline Anselmo, Liza Buss, Sara Jamal, Sarai Monarrez Yesaki and Ellie Zogg. Buss transferred from Iowa State after earning All-Big 12 second-team honors and All-Big 12 Freshman team accolades last season. Zogg was a five-star recruit out of high school and transferred from South Carolina after her freshman season last year. Anselmo, Monarrez Yesaki and Jamal are all freshman.
Gyulai is in her sixth season at the helm on the Hilltop and led SMU to 14-10 record last season and a ITA ranking as high as No. 49 (Feb. 23) during the season. Gyulai also guided SMU to the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship for the second-consecutive year.
ABOUT HEADINGTON FAMILY TENNIS CENTER:
The Headington Family Tennis Center is the home to Oklahoma men's and women's tennis. The facility also features the new Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion directly to the east of the outdoor courts.
The facility features 12 outdoor courts, seating for fans, championship lighting and surface, a sound system, electronic scoreboards and benches on every court. The outdoor courts are split into four three-court quadrants for easy access and viewing.
With the addition of the Gregg Wadley Indoor Pavilion, the complex houses 18 courts total, locker rooms for both home teams and visitors, storage for trainers and equipment staff and indoor amenities for fans.
The Headington Family Tennis Center has served host to numerous championship events including NCAA First & Second Rounds seven times (2003, 2004, 2010-13), and the Big 12 Championships in 2004 and 2009.
HOME SWEET HOME:
SMU will take advantage of the two-year old SMU Tennis Complex, starting their season at home with six straight matches before facing back-to-back Big 12 opponents on the road. The Mustangs will first head to Norman to play Oklahoma Sunday, followed by a trip to College Station, Texas to face No. 14 Texas A&M on Friday.
From Feb. 26 to April 1, the Mustangs will play a total of 10 matches at home, including four nationally ranked opponents (Arizona, Wichita State, Georgia State, UT Arlington) from the final ITA poll from last season.
LOOKING AHEAD:
SMU plays at No. 14 Texas A&M on Friday before beginning a ten-match homestand with a doubleheader against Nevada and UT Permian Basin on Sunday, Feb. 26. The home stretch includes UCF (March 4), Arizona (March 5), Wichita State (March 10), Georgia State (March 13), Cincinnati (March 14), Kansas State (March 18), Louisiana Tech (March 26) and UT Arlington (April 1).
