FRESNO, Calif. (SMU) – The No. 5 SMU equestrian team was edged out by No. 8 Fresno State, 10-9, Saturday at the Fresno State Student Horse Center.
The Mustangs (5-4, 3-1 UEC) started out early with a 3-2 lead following Equitation over Fences. Senior
Sylvia de Toledo scored the first point of the meet with a 80-71 victory over Madelyn Keck, before freshman
Vivian Yowan won 82-78 against Natalie Wendt, en route to being named MOP. Sophomore
Nora Gray earned the final point, 79-60 over Alex Dirickson, to put the Mustangs on top.
SMU and Fresno State (7-4, 4-1 UEC) split Equitation on the Flat, 2-2. Senior
Leina King won her fourth straight ride with a 72-67 victory over Dirickson, before de Toledo topped Kylina Chalack, 73-71, for her second win of the day.
In the western arena, SMU recorded tallied two points in reining and horsemanship. In reining, sophomore
Olivia Pakula tallied a point for the Mustangs after defeating Shea Gilson, 70.5-70.
Keagan Snively recorded SMU's second reining win, and earned the MOP with a 71-66 decision over Ally Frias.
Ashley Mauney and
Hannah McCain both won in horsemanship. Mauney, edged Maddison Robinson, 73-72, before McCain picked up a 73.5-72.5 decision.
The Mustangs return to action March 4 when SMU heads to Blythewood, S.C., to compete against South Carolina.
