ARLINGTON, Texas (SMU)— The SMU men's tennis team broke UT Arlington's eight-game win streak defeating the Maverick's 4-1 Thursday afternoon. The Mustangs improved to 7-2 overall, while UTA dropped to 8-2 on the season.
SMU earned the first point of the afternoon as No. 42
Hunter Johnson and
Yates Johnson defeated Mario Muniesa and Marcos Sanz of UTA, 6-3.
Ronald Slobodchikov and
Tony Russell secured the team-point beating UTA's Daniel Armengol and Guanarteme Nuez, 6-3.
In singles action,
Yates Johnson earned SMU's second point of the day defeating Sanz in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. No. 46 Slobodchikov beat Nuez also in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, before No. 51
Hunter Johnson secured the win for SMU beating UTA's Muniesa, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5, in a nail biting finish.
Next, the Mustangs host their first American Athletic Conference opponent, UCF, Sunday at 1 p.m. at the SMU Tennis Complex.
