DALLAS (SMU) – Despite winning the doubles point, the No. 26 SMU men's tennis team dropped a close 5-2 decision to No. 41 TCU Thursday night at the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs had their five-match win streak snapped and fell to 8-3 on the season, while the Horned Frogs improved to 5-3.
The Johnson twins (Yates and Hunter) clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 7-6 (8-6) win against No. 14 Guillermo Nunez and Alex Rybakov. SMU first won in the No. 3 slot with
Tony Russell and
Ronald Slobodchikov easily defeating Cameron Norrie and and Gianni Mancini, 6-1.
In singles play, the match remained close after the Horned Frogs won the No. 1 singles with No. 19 Norrie defeating No. 46 Slobodchikov, 6-0, 6-2. The Horned Frogs took a 2-1 lead after Jerry Lopez won 6-2, 6-2, against Markus Kenner in the No. 4 slot.
Arkadijs Slobodkins kept the Mustangs close after tying the match at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles against Mancini.
TCU regained the lead with Reese Stalder winning a close 7-5, 7-5 decision against
Yates Johnson in No. 5 singles. The Mustangs continued to fight and went to three sets in both No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Rybakov registered a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win against No. 51
Hunter Johnson to clinch the win for the Horned Frogs.
SMU continues its homestand Monday, March 13 against Navy at 12 p.m. CT.
