ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (SMU) – The SMU women's golf team closed out the 2016-17 season at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional held at the UNM Championship Course. As a team, the Mustangs finished 13th in the 18-team field. Sophomore
Brigitte Dunne led the Ponies, finishing 8-over 224 and tied for 27th place.
Dunne (75-74-75--224) climbed 10 spots on the individual leaderboard in the third round to secure her final placement, carding a 3-over 75. It was the highest finish for the Mustangs since the 2015 St. George Regional.
Freshman
Faith Summers (77-77-75--229) and senior
Lindsey McCurdy (83-74-75--232) also went 3-over on the final 18 to finish the event tied for 57th and 68th, respectively. Summers led the Mustangs with nine birdies over 54 holes, the tournament's fourth highest individual total.
"I'm super proud of Lindsey and the way she's played this year," Sutherland added. "She posted the best year of any player in SMU history, and I think that's a remarkable feat."
In her first NCAA Regional appearance,
Kenzie Wright (74-76-77--227) earned the second highest finish for SMU, tying for 43rd following a third-round 5-over 77. Classmate
Ana Paula Ramirez also represented the Mustangs at the event, finishing 18-over 234.
No. 1 Stanford won the event, shooting 2-over 866, while the Cardinal's Albane Valenzuela took medalist honors at 6-under 210.
"Our identity all year has been the amount of pars we've made, but our short game let us down this week," Sutherland said.
This was the 15th overall NCAA appearance for the Mustangs, and the fifth consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. SMU finished second at the American Athletic Championship in April and was ranked as high as No. 20 during the 2016-17 season. McCurdy, Dunne and Wright all earned all-conference accolades for the Mustangs.
"We had a great year," Sutherland concluded. "The team improved each day, and worked really hard at practice. They are all extremely coachable and have great attitudes towards the game. Dave [Von Ins] and I had a lot of fun coaching this group. They gave us all they had and they really came together as a team. It's been fun to watch them grow."
