DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis program has unveiled its schedule for the 2017-18 season, Head Coach
Kati Gyulai announced on Wednesday.
The fall season begins Sept. 22-24 when select individuals compete at the Rice Invitational in Houston. The Owls finished last season ranked No. 40 in the final International Tennis Association (ITA) poll. The team will then split time between an International Team Federation (ITF) event from Sept. 25-Oct.1 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and the Cal Nike Fall Invitational from Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Berkeley, California.
The Mustangs will then head to the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California, Sept. 30-Oct., before competing in an ITF event in Tyler, Texas, Oct. 30-Nov. 5. Select individuals will remain home for Metroplex Mania Oct. 6-8.
SMU will remain close to home as the Mustangs compete at the ITA Texas Regional Oct. 13-17 in Fort Worth. Mustangs that have qualified at various tournaments throughout the fall season will play at the ITA National Fall Championships Nov. 1-5 in Indian Wells, California. The fall season continues for the Mustangs at home for the Red and Blue Challenge Nov. 3-5, before culminating at an ITF event Nov. 13 in Norman, Oklahoma.
The spring season opens at home Jan. 12-15 against BYU, Georgia State and North Texas.
From Jan. 20 to Feb. 18, SMU will play a total of nine matches at home, including games against four NCAA Tournament teams (Wichita State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M, USF) from last season.
SMU's homestand begins Jan. 20 against Wichita State, the newest member of the American Athletic Conference. The Mustangs' first doubleheader of the season will be on Jan. 26 against Tyler Junior College and Abilene Christian. SMU will then face A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 3, before a match against Iowa on Feb. 4.
SMU faces conference foe UCF on Feb. 9 and Northwestern State on Feb. 12. Texas A&M comes to Dallas for a matchup with SMU on Feb. 17. The Aggies finished last season ranked No. 16 in the ITA poll. The Mustangs close out their nine-game homestand against defending conference champion USF on Feb. 18.
In their first road trip of the season, the Mustangs head to California to face UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 27, before traveling to Los Angeles for a match at Loyola Marymount on Feb. 28. UC Santa Barbara finished last season ranked No. 46.
The Mustangs return home for its next three matches against Kansas State (March 9), Georgia State (March 11), and Troy (March 16).
Four out of SMU's next five games will be against conference opponents. The Mustangs travel to New Orleans, Louisiana, for a match on March 23 against Tulsa, which finished last season with a NCAA Tournament bid and ranked No. 44. SMU then plays Tulane on March 25, before returning home for a game against East Carolina (March 31). SMU last road match of the year will be at UT Arlington on April 4, followed by a game April 7 against Houston.
SMU's last two regular season matches will be at home against North Texas (April 12) and ULM (April 14) before postseason play begins.
The Mustangs remain at home to host the American Athletic Conference Championships April 18-21 at the SMU Tennis Complex. NCAA Regionals takes place May 11-13 at school sites, while the 2018 NCAA Team and Individual Championships will be held at Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, beginning May 17.
