DALLAS (SMU) – Senior
Jonathan Gomez and junior
Simon Golczyk combined for four wins in the SMU men's swimming and diving loss to Northwestern Saturday afternoon. The event served as Senior Day for 13 Mustang student-athletes.
Gomez swept his individual events on the day, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:19.54), 200-yard butterfly (1:47.91) and 400-yard individual medley (3:58.62). His 200 fly time kept him under the NCAA provisional standard, while his win in the 400 IM was a season best.
Golczyk's win came in the 100-yard butterfly where he out-touched his Wildcat competitor by .02 seconds, covering the distance in 50.00.
In freestyle events, freshman
Matthew Nutter earned runner-up finishes in the 200-yard (1:42.05) and 100-yard (46.68) distances, while senior
Nick Badsky (20.98) and sophomore
Ralph Koo (21.31) finished second and third, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle. Senior
Christian Scherubl (4:44.38) was third in the 500 free.
Senior
Stefan Popov led SMU in breaststroke events, finishing second in the 200 (2:07.10) and third in the 100 (57.92).
Trey Kilbride (100 yard, 51.33) and
Stephen Cheng (200 yard, 1:50.40) finished third in backstroke races.
The Mustangs placed second in both relays at the event, clocking a season-best 1:31.28 in the 200-yard medley relay.
In diving action, senior
Bryce Klein picked up second-place points on 1 meter.
