SMU Remains Unbeaten At Home In Conference Matches With Win Against Memphis

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team won the last three sets for a 3-2 victory against Memphis Friday night (24-26, 19-25, 25-12, 30-28, 15-6), remaining unbeaten at home in American Athletic Conference matches.

Freshman Hannah Jacobs led the Mustangs (9-13, 6-6 The American) with 15 kills. Brittany Adams and Rachel Woulfe each scored 14 kills, and Meryn Kennedy added 11 kills with seven blocks. SMU outscored Memphis (11-13, 4-8 The American) 69-46 on the attack.

SMU led 8-4 at the switch in the fifth set, and went on a 7-2 run after the break for the win. SMU held Memphis to a .096 attack percentage for the match.
The Mustangs survived in the fourth set to win 30-28, forcing a fifth set. Out of subs with freshman defensive specialist Bria' Merchant in the front row and senior attacker Kelly Brunstein in the back row,

SMU forced Memphis into two straight attack errors to win the set. SMU had the first chance to win the set, but served an error leading 24-23. Memphis had the next set-point chance, but Adams scored back-to-back kills. SMU had four more set-point serves before winning on the sixth chance.

SMU dominated the Tigers in the third set, winning 25-12. The Mustangs held Memphis to a -.114 attack percentage in the set, posting three blocks and 20 digs while allowing just five kills. With the score tied, 3-3, SMU went on a 10-1 run, taking a 13-4 lead. Memphis never got close the rest of the set.

Memphis came back to win 26-24 in the first set. Woulfe led all attackers with five kills, but the Tigers recorded their seventh block of the set for the two-point advantage needed to win. Trailing 7-5, SMU went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-8 lead. The Tigers rallied back to recapture the lead, and held a three-point advantage late, 20-17. The Mustangs scored five of the next six points to regain the advantage, 22-21. It was tied three more times before Memphis finished with the block.

The Tigers won the second set 25-19 to lead 2-0 in the match. Memphis scored five of the first six points. SMU battled back, taking a 12-11 lead. The Mustangs led 15-14 before the Tigers scored four straight. Memphis never trailed again.

The Mustangs host Tulane Sunday at 1 p.m.
