SMU Will Take On UC Santa Barbara and Loyola Marymount

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team (5-5) will travel to California for the first road matches of the spring dual match season, facing UC Santa Barbara (5-6) on Tuesday, Feb. 27, and Loyola Marymount (4-2) on Wednesday, Feb. 28.Â
The Mustangs return to the court after going 0-2 in last weekend's matches, dropping a 5-2 decision against Texas A&M and a 4-3 close loss against American Conference-rival USF. Against the Aggies, the Mustangs dropped the doubles point before picking up victories at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. On Sunday against USF, the match came down to junior Sarai Monarrez Yesaki at No. 3 singles.
Unfortunately SMU couldn't overpower the Bulls, falling 4-3. Junior Karina Traxler delivered two doubles victories (with partner Monarrez Yesaki) and won both her singles matches.
SCOUTING UC SANTA BARBARA:
UC Santa Barbara began the spring season with a tough opening schedule against UCLA, USC, Miami and Tulane. Over that stretch, the Gauchos went 2-2. The team was on a three-game slide going into last weekend, before picking up wins against UC Davis and UC Riverside. UCSB has one ranked doubles pair in No. 57 Natalie Da Silveira and Palina Dubavets.
SCOUTING LOYOLA MARYMOUNT:
Loyola Marymount enters Wednesday's match with a 4-2 record for the dual match season, with losses coming at the hands of USC and No. 10 UCLA. Despite the losses, the Lions boast some young talent. No. 27 Veronica Miroshnichenko represents LMU on the Oracle/ITA national rankings for singles, and the freshman partners with Eva Marie Voracek to rank No. 22 nationally in doubles.Â

Wednesday will be SMU's first matchup against Loyola Marymount, but the Mustangs head to California with a perfect 4-0 all-time record against UC Santa Barbara.

The Mustangs fell, 4-3, to USF (2-6) on Sunday in a tight match that came down to the final set of No. 3 singles. SMU is now 5-5 overall and 0-3 in American Conference matches.
SMU proved dominant in doubles play, earning wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Karina Traxler and Sarai Monarrez Yesaki joined to defeat Nicole Dzenga and Vanja Klaric, 6-1, while Nicole Petchey and Ana Perez-Lopez defeated Alexandria Mjos and Ana Roman Dominguez, 6-1.
The Bulls and the Mustangs exchanged points in singles play, with SMU gaining wins at No. 1 behind Anzhelika Shapovalova (6-2, 6-3) and No. 4 behind Traxler (6-3, 2-6, 6-2).
With the score tied at 3-3, No. 3 singles became the deciding match. Monarrez Yesaki fought back from a four-game deficit in the final set, but ultimately lost the match, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, to give USF the victory.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Mustangs will return home to face Kansas State (5-1) on Friday, March 9, at the SMU Tennis Complex.
