DALLAS (SMU) - SMU Track and Field will be representing on the national stage once again as the Mustangs send two student athletes to the 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 6-9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Junior Latessa Johnson and Senior Tochi Nlemchi each placed in the top 12 in the 200-meter dash and shot put, respectively, at the NCAA West Preliminary May 24-26 in Sacramento, California.

Both Mustangs begin competition on Thursday, June 7. Nlemchi takes on the shot put finals at 8:10 p.m. CT followed by Latessa Johnson in the 200-meter dash semifinals at 8:14 p.m. CT. The 200-meter dash finals are slated for Saturday, June 9, at 7:07 p.m. CT.

AT THE CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Latessa Johnson – 200-meter – Junior – Dallas, Texas
Johnson will return to the national championship in the 200-meter for the second time in her career after earning Second Team All-American honors with a ninth-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Johnson placed third in her heat at her third-consecutive West Preliminary with a time of 22.92 to automatically advance to the event semifinal this week in Eugene. Johnson broke her own school record in the 200-meter dash at the American Conference Championship, clocking 22.77 to take home the silver medal. Johnson is seeded 15th.

Tochi Nlemchi – Shot Put – Senior – Waxahachie, Texas
Nlemchi qualified for her second career NCAA Championship in the shot put with a throw of 16.29m for ninth-place at her fourth trip to the West Preliminary. The senior is no stranger to the national stage, having earned ninth-place at the 2016 NCAA Championships to take home Second Team All-American honors. She set an American Conference record in the shot put at the conference championships with a hurl of 17.05m, the third-best mark in program history. Nlemchi is seeded 19th.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE OUTDOOR T&F CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP
The Mustangs claimed fifth place at the American Conference Outdoor Championships May 11-13 in Cincinnati, Ohio, after earning nine all-conference finishes in six events throughout the weekend.

Tochi Nlemchi highlighted the Mustangs team performance by earning her second career AAC outdoor shot put title. The senior threw 17.05m in the event, setting a PR, a stadium record, a meet record and the American Conference record.

Latessa Johnson claimed silver in both the 100m and 200m after earning a lifetime best mark of 22.77 in the 200. Chelsea Francis followed with bronze in both events.

In distance events, Hannah Miller and Svenja Ojstersek led the way for SMU. Both runners medaled in the 10,000m (Ojsersek – silver, Miller – bronze), and Miller found silver in the 5,000 for her second consecutive all-conference finish in the event. 

Atipa Mabonga rounded out the all-conference performances with a PR in the triple jump. Her mark of 12.69m propelled her into second place for the freshman's first All-AAC honor. 

Madison Pyle broke a record of her own, running the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.05 for the fastest time in school history.
