Box Score DALLAS (SMU) – SMU won a sixth consecutive American Athletic Conference match and improved to 8-1 at home with a straight sets victory against Connecticut Sunday (25-10, 25-21, 26-24). Freshman
Mekenzi Heckmann led the Mustangs with 12 kills, hitting .579, and SMU hit .320 with 45 kills as a team.
SMU (13-5, 6-2 The American) held on to complete the sweep with a 26-24 in in the third set. Neither team led by more than two points the entire set.
Alex Glover followed a Heckmann kill with one of her own to give SMU a 20-19 lead. The lead changed twice in the next four points before SMU scored three in-a-row for a 23-21 advantage. The lead was still two, 24-22, before UConn (8-12, 2-6) scored two kills while facing match point. With a chance to take the lead, UConn served it into the net, giving SMU a third chance to end the match.
Rachel Woulfe and
Meryn Kennedy posted just the third block of the match for the Mustangs for the 26-24 win.
Lily Heim had 37 of SMU's 39 assists, averaging 12.0 per set for the weekend. Woulfe, Kennedy and
Hannah Jacobs each scored eight kills for the Mustangs. Despite only recording three blocks, SMU held the Huskies to a .184 attack percentage, recording 44 digs. Libero
Montana Watts led the team with 11 digs, and
Kendall Patterson had nine digs.
The Mustangs cruised to a 25-10 win in the first set, taking a 9-2 lead early en route to the victory. SMU hit .400 while outscoring UConn 17-4 on the attack. Each team had 12 kills in the second set, but the Mustangs had two more service aces, three, and two fewer errors, 5-7, for the four-point win, 25-21.
SMU returns to the road for a Friday night match at ECU at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT. The trip concludes Sunday at Cincinnati at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
