Memphis, Tenn." (SMU) – SMU cross country finished in ninth at the American Athletic Conference Championships on Friday morning from Memphis' Shelby Farms Course.

"We had a solid race," said head coach 'A Havahla Haynes. "Tess (Misgen) & Maddie (Hulcy) did an incredible job of putting themselves into the top-40 early and committing to a quick rhythm on a sloppy course. Their consistent leadership has proved positive. We had a great demonstration in teamwork today and it was best shown by Olivia Witt, one of our multi-event athletes, who joined us for AACs to be a sixth runner. I am proud of this team and their progress to this point."

In the 6K race, the Mustangs were led by junior transfer Tess Misgen. On a soggy course that had seen a good amount of rain over the last two days, Misgen finished in 35th with a time 22:01. The Mustangs were aided on the scoreboard by their grouping of four runners from 35th to 51st. A pair of first-year runners followed closely behind Misgen. Lior Kremer earned 40th place with a time 22:11 with Maddie Hulcy five seconds behind in 44th place.

Sophomore Olivia Lackner improved by over four minutes from her 2018 performance at the AACs. Lackner clocked in at 22:24 in 51st place. Freshman Eve Hoeltgen was the final Mustang scorer with a time of 25:44 in 80th place. In her first race since being added to the cross country squad, sophomore Olivia Witt crossed the line in 26:44, good for 81^st place.

As a team, the young Mustangs squad had a score of 250 points. The Mustangs were one of six teams with four runners in the top 51 with the other five teams being the top-five overall finishing programs. SMU finished 28 points ahead of 10th-place USF and 56 ahead of the last overall Tulane. They trailed Houston by 25 for eighth place.

Overall, Wichita State's Winny Koskei repeated as champion but her Shockers were eclipsed by Tulsa for the team title.

Next on the slate is the NCAA South Central Regional hosted by the University of Arkansas on Nov. 15.
