SMU cross country heads to Arkansas for the NCAA South Central Regional meet set for 11 a.m. on Friday morning from the University of Arkansas' Agri Park.
"The race is very competitive in the top-20," said head coach 'A Havahla Haynes. "Tomorrow the team has every intention to get out with top-50 women through the first mile of the race and see what they are capable of."Â

The Mustangs travel to the NCAA Regionals after a ninth-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship. The squad was led by Tess Misgen, who had a 22:01 finish in the 6K at Shelby Farms Park. The Mustangs were aided by the top four runners, finishing in a 43-second gap and placing 35th through 60th.

The South Central Region, which includes most of Texas along with Louisiana and Arkansas, features the No. 1 team in the country, the Arkansas Razorbacks. Arkansas has won the last eight South Central Championship meets. SMU's last regional title came in 2009. The top-two finishing teams in each region earn automatic bids into the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Mustangs will send a five-runner contingent to Arkansas. Tess Misgen is the lone upperclassman in the lineup, while Olivia Lackner is the only sophomore. SMU will race three freshman:Â Maddie Hulcy, Lior Kremer and Eve Hoeltgen.

Last season, the Mustangs finished sixth at the regional in College Station led by the duo of Hannah Miller and Svenja Ojstersek. Miller qualified for the NCAA Championships with her fifth-place finish and Ojstersek moved on to the Championships with her eighth-place finish. Anneke Grogan was All-Region by finishing in the top-25.
