Four Mustangs Selected For All-Conference Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) – Four SMU women's soccer athletes were named to All-Conference teams for the 2019 season, the American Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday.
Allie Thornton and Celiana Torres both earned spots on the All-Conference First Team while Wayny Balata and Tatum Sutherland were named to the All-Rookie Team.
This season, Thornton leads the team with 12 goals, with six of them being game-winning. She has also had two assists for a total of 26 points, the most for a single season in her career. Thornton has been the team's go-to for penalty kicks and has converted three of the four she has taken this season. This is the senior's fourth season to be named to the All-Conference First Team.
Torres joins Thornton on the All-Conference First Team after scoring five goals and totaling nine assists for 21 points this season. Her current career assists per game average is a 0.42, placing her at sixth in SMU's Record Book. In 2018, Torres was named to the conference's All-Rookie Team.
Playing in 18 games at midfield this season and starting in 17 of them, Balata has scored two goals and assisted with two while also helping the Mustang defense to eight of the team's nine shutouts this season.
Sutherland earned her spot on the All-Rookie team for her performances as SMU's starter in goal this season. Playing over 1600 minutes, she has tallied 60 saves and holds a 0.86 goals against average to place her at fourth in SMU's Record Book for season GAA. Sutherland has been credited with 12 wins and 7.5 shutouts this season.
