Accolades Continue To Roll In For SMU Soccer

DALLAS (SMU) – The accolades continue to pour in for the SMU men's soccer team as three Mustangs earned All-American honors from multiple publications, it was announced over the weekend.
Garrett McLaughlin, a Senior CLASS award finalist, earned second team honors from the prestigious organization that recognizes the nation's top seniors who excel on and off the field. McLaughlin scored a career-high 16 goals in 2019 and was named All-East Region by United Soccer Coaches last week.
The Oklahoma City native also brings home a second team All-America selection from College Soccer News. McLaughlin finished the 2019 campaign with 37 points, a mark good for seventh most in the country and most among all Mustangs. The best performance of his season came against Cincinnati when he tied the SMU record by scoring five times in the match. McLaughlin had the best offensive season of any Mustang in quite some time, recording the most goals and points since Diego Walsh in 2002.
Joining McLaughlin on the All-America list was Eddie Munjoma, who was named a first team All-America selection by College Soccer News, just a few days after being named a first team selection by United Soccer Coaches. Munjoma tallied a career-high 12 goals, including game-winners in the AAC conference championship match and the Sweet 16. Munjoma's trophy case continues to grow as the McKinney, Texas, native was named AAC defensive player of the year after helping anchor an SMU defense that allowed just 0.78 goals per game, 16th fewest in the nation.
The final Mustang honored over the weekend was AAC midfielder of the year, Gabriel Costa. A week after earning third team All-America honors from United Soccer Coaches, the Rio de Janeiro native added a third team selection from College Soccer news over the weekend. The sophomore joined the Mustangs in 2019 as a transfer from Asuza Pacific and made an immediate impact, scoring nine times for SMU in just 18 games, in addition to dishing out 11 assists, the fourth most in the country.
SMU finished its season with an 18-2-1 record that saw it defeat three teams in the Top 10 and make a run to the NCAA quarterfinals, where it fell to national runner-up Virginia in overtime.
