SMU Men's Tennis Announced its 2020 spring slate featuring 31 matches including 18 at the SMU Tennis Complex.
"I'm thrilled to announce our 2020 Spring schedule," said head coach
Grant Chen. "We have a very challenging and exciting dual season ahead of us which features home matches against Wisconsin, Columbia, Utah, TCU and defending national champions Texas. Road matches include Nebraska, Old Dominion, conference opponents Wichita State, Tulane as well as Ponies In Palm Springs where we will play three matches in California in March."
The Mustangs are set to face six opponents who made the 2019 NCAA Championship, including the reigning champ Texas, who comes to Dallas to face the Mustangs on Jan. 18. The schedule also includes 10 teams who finished the year ranked, as well as 19 nationally ranked singles opponents.
The Mustangs begin the 2020 season with a doubleheader against Prairie View (Jan. 16), one of nine doubleheaders on the slate. The next weekend, the Mustangs host No. 1 Texas in a doubleheader with Northern Colorado (Jan. 18). The first road trip of the season has the Mustangs traveling to Beaumont to take on Lamar (Jan. 25). After four games at home, SMU heads into a challenging road portion facing three of four teams that finished the year ranked. The Mustangs face Old Dominion (Feb. 7) and Nebraska (Feb. 8) in Virginia then battle LSU (Feb. 15) and Tulane (Feb. 16) in Louisiana.
The first home conference match comes against USF (Feb. 21). TCU, fresh off a sweet 16 appearance, makes the trip to Dallas for the annual rivalry game on Feb. 22. The Mustangs head south for a doubleheader in Houston. The squad faces Rice and Valpo at the Rice Tennis Facility (Mar. 1)
SMU Tennis heads to California the second week in March for its "Ponies In Palm Springs" trip (Mar. 10-11). During the stay in the greater LA area, SMU faces UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount and a neutral site game against Liberty.
The Mustangs head to Kansas (Apr. 4-5) to take on two conference matches, Wichita State and ECU. After three instate opponents (UT Dallas, UTA and Trinity), the Mustangs conclude the regular season at home against Tulsa. Tulsa will then host the American Athletic Conference Tennis Championships the following week.
"This schedule will challenge our team to see where we stand in the state of Texas, conference and some of the best teams in the nation," added Chen. "I know our boys are looking forward to the opportunity and are hungry for improvement.""
All Mustang home matches are free for fans at the SMU Tennis Complex.
