No. 5 SMU Falls To No. 1 Virginia in Overtime, Season Ends in Elite Eight

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 5 SMU's season came to an end in the NCAA Elite Eight on Friday night when it fell to No. 1 Virginia, 3-2, in overtime.
8-seeded SMU (18-2-1) started the match off in the right foot when it broke away from the Virginia (20-1-1) back line in the second minute, resulting in a Garrett McLaughlin chance. But the AAC First-Teamer pushed his shot just right of the post to leave the scoreboard even.
The next 15 minutes featured lots of physical play, with the referee blowing the whistle on a combined 10 fouls.
In the 18th minute, No. 1 UVA broke out on a counter attack that landed the ball on Daryl Dike's boot just inside the box. Dike played it across the face of the goal and found Axel Gunnarsson who was able to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 advantage.
SMU would control the remainder of the half, playing most of the last 25 minutes in their attacking third, but weren't able to find an equalizer before the halftime whistle blew.
With their backs against the walls, the Mustangs continued to press for a goal in the second half. The equalizer came in the 70th minute when SMU earned a penalty after a late tackle in the box. Just like in the Sweet 16 match, Gabriel Costa would step in to take the penalty.
Costa would put the penalty off the right post and into the net to tie the game at 1 apiece with 20 minutes left.
But the Hoos would answer in the 78th minute when Dike drove down the left side of the box and earned a Virginia penalty. Joe Bell would step up and despite SMU keeper Grant Makela guessing right, Bell was able to put Virginia up 2-1 with just 12 minutes left.
Once again, The Mustangs would need to find a goal to keep their season alive, and they would do just that in the 84th minute when Gabriel Costa played a perfect ball to Henrik Bredeli who beat Shutler with his head, tying the game at 2-2.
The last six minutes of regulation would be a mad dash, as both teams looked to punch their ticket to Cary, N.C. for the College Cup, but neither side found a winner and the game went to overtime.
In the 94th minute, UVA would earn another penalty. Patrick Michael Hillyard would come in for an injured Grant Makela and save the penalty, but Joe Bell would then scored off the deflection, giving No. 1 Virginia a golden goal and ending SMU's season in the NCAA quarterfinals.
The SMU seniors finish their career with 51 wins, three conference championships and three NCAA tournament berths.
