DALLAS (SMU) - Sophomore Celiana Torres is headed to Mexico City, Mexico to participate in a U-20 National Team Camp in hopes of landing a spot on the Mexican U-20 National Team.
The National Team landscape is nothing new for Torres. Before her time on the Hilltop, she played for Mexico's U-17 WNT, which included an appearance in the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup that took place in Jordan. In their opening match verses New Zealand, she scored one of the top goals of the tournament. The team advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated.
"I'm so excited," Torres said of the opportunity. "It's been a long time since I've played with the National Team. That's always been my dream – playing on the National Team and being able to represent my country. I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to possibly be part of that."
Torres will join others who have been part of the U-20 process for a while. She has missed several camps due to recovering from a foot injury last spring. She has not yet been able to attend one of the National Team Camps for the U-20 cycle; however, after working with coaches, professors and advisors to ensure that she is able to complete her finals, Torres will be able to join other athletes to be evaluated on their skills and potential team chemistry starting next week.
From camp, players will be selected to compete for Mexico in the 2020 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship in February, a chance for the country to qualify for the 2020 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup that will be hosted in Nigeria next summer.
As a Mustang in 2019, Torres was named to the All-American Athletic Conference First Team and the United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Second Team. She led SMU in assists with nine and netted five goals. As a freshman, she contributed with seven goals, three of them being game-winners, and six assists. Her performance that season earned her a spot on the AAC All-Rookie Team.
