KANSAS CITY, Mo. (United Soccer Coaches/SMU) -- Four Mustangs were honored on Monday morning when they were selected to All-Region teams by United Soccer Coaches, it was announced by the organization.
Eddie Munjoma, Garrett McLaughlin and Gabriel Costa all earned East Region First Team honors, and Knut Ahlander claimed a spot on the Third Team. It's the third straight year that at least one Mustang was named to the First Team and sixth consecutive year with an All-Region honor of any type.Â
Munjoma, the AAC defensive player of the year, earns an All-Region spot for the first time in his career. His 12 goals and 32 points were the second most on an SMU team that scored the second most goals in the country, and he was part of a backline that allowed an AAC-low 12 goals in the regular season. Munjoma's career year saw him earn multiple weekly and yearly honors, including a MAC Hermann semifinalist spot, given annually to the nation's top soccer player.Â
Garrett McLaughlin found his way onto the All-Region first team list for the second time in his career after scoring a team-high 16 goals, tallying 37 points and a nation-best seven game-winning goals. The best performance of his season came at Cincinnati where he tied an SMU record by scoring five goals in a 7-1 win. McLaughlin, who was named Third Team All-American as a sophomore is now eligible again for All-American honors.
AAC midfielder of the year Gabriel Costa was selected as an All-Region First Team player during his first year on the Hilltop. The Rio de Janeiro native scored nine goals and dished out 11 assists in just 18 games. His 0.61 assists per game are the third most in the country and both his penalty goals versus No. 8 UCF and No. 1 Virginia tied the game in the NCAA Tournament.
Rounding out the honors for the Mustangs was Knut Ahlander, who earned a Third Team selection after leading the country in assists with 13. Ahlander added seven goals to his tally in 2019 and was named AAC All-Conference Second Team.
The United Soccer Coaches east region featured four of the nation's Top 16 seeds in this year's tournament, and landed five teams into the bracket as a whole. The Mustangs' (18-2-1) season came to a close over the weekend when they lost to No. 1 Virginia in overtime in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament.Â
The teams are selected through voting by member coaches in those respective divisions. Student-athletes earning First Team All-Region honors are now eligible to earn All-America status.
