SMU women's tennis closes out a three-match homestand against the Tulane Green Wave Sunday afternoon at noon from the SMU Tennis Complex. The Mustangs are currently on a three-match winning streak.
Last weekend, the Mustangs picked up a pair of home wins, defeating [rv] USC 4-3 on Saturday before cruising past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-0 on Sunday. Senior Liza Buss won American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for her contribution to the wins. Buss went 2-0 in singles play and 1-0 in doubles, including a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over USC's No. 20 Salma Ewing at the No. 1 singles position that clinched the match for SMU.
Buss has won three straight singles matches and holds a 4-2 record against ranked opponents this season. Senior Vivienne Kulicke has also won three straight matches and holds a team-best 14-4 singles record, playing primarily at No. 2 singles. Senior Anzhelika Shapovalova has a 5-1 singles record in dual matches this spring, primarily lining up at No. 3.
Tulane started the dual season with four straight wins, but has since dropped five consecutive matches. The Green Wave is 0-2 against AAC opponents, losing to East Carolina 4-1 on Feb. 8 and Memphis 4-3 on Feb. 10. Alex Alegre holds the best singles record this season for Tulane at 9-7, while Laura Fabrizi has played at No. 1 singles all spring. The duo of Ivone Alvaro and Elena Muller has an 8-1 doubles record this season, including a 6-0 mark playing at No. 1 doubles.
SMU and Tulane have one common opponent so far this year, Texas Tech. On Jan. 17, the Mustangs opened the dual season by dropping a hard-fought 4-3 decision to the then-No. 17 Red Raiders. On Feb. 15, the No. 22 Red Raiders swept Tulane 7-0.
