SMU women's tennis travels to Kansas this week for a pair of matches against Kansas State and Wichita State. The Mustangs will take on the Wildcats at noon on Thursday, Feb. 21 in Manhattan, Kan., and the Shockers at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 in Wichita, Kan.
The Mustangs have won four straight matches, most recently sweeping Tulane, 7-0, at home on Feb. 17. SMU put in a dominant performance in its first American Athletic Conference match of the year, winning 88 out of a possible 116 games between singles and doubles.
Seniors Liza Buss, Vivienne Kulicke and Anzhelika Shapovalova, who have primarily been playing in the Mustangs' top three singles positions, are all on individual four-match win streaks. Shapovalova has a 6-1 record in dual matches, a team best. Kulicke is 15-4 this season including fall competition, a team-high for wins.
The duo of senior Karina Traxler and junior Tiffany Hollebeck holds a 9-1 doubles record this season, including 6-0 during dual play, and is on an eight-match win streak.
Kansas State is on a two-match win streak, beating North Texas 4-3 on Feb. 15 and Arizona 4-0 on Feb. 16. The Wildcats lead the all-time series against SMU 3-1. This is the fourth consecutive year the teams have met, with K-State winning the most recent match-up 5-2 on March 9, 2018. SMU's lone win in the series came on March 18, 2017, a 5-2 victory behind singles wins by Buss and Sarai Monarrez Yesaki.
Wichita State enters Friday's contest on a four-match win streak, having beaten UT Arlington, Louisville, Nebraska and Creighton. In their lone AAC match to date, the Shockers fell to Houston, 4-1. The Shockers duo of Fatima Bizhukova and Marta Bellucco were ranked No. 26 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Doubles Ranking as of Feb. 13. Wichita State holds a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series against SMU, including wins in the last four meetings.
