SMU women's tennis hosts a pair of matches this weekend, facing USC on Saturday, Feb. 9 at noon and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs most recently defeated St. Mary's 4-0 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by Stanford on Jan. 27. Seniors Liza Buss, Anzhelika Shapovalova and Karina Traxler all recorded both doubles and singles victories in the win over the Gaels.
Senior Vivienne Kulicke holds a team-best 13-4 singles record, including wins at the No. 2 position against Washington State and Oklahoma. The doubles pair of Traxler and junior Tiffany Hollebeck has won six straight matches, holding a team-best record of 7-1. Traxler individually has been a part of 13 doubles wins this season.
The Trojans started their dual campaign by defeating No. 13 South Carolina 4-1 at the Australian Open in Melbourne, Australia. USC, who is receiving votes in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, returned to Los Angeles to beat Loyola Marymount and San Diego, both by scores of 4-2. The Trojans are led by freshmen Salma Ewing and Danielle Willson, who are ranked No. 20 and No. 86, respectively, by the ITA in singles. In doubles, the duo of Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes is ranked No. 18. This is the first ever meeting between SMU and USC.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has picked up wins against Trinity University (Texas), Prairie View A&M (doubleheader sweep) and UTRGV this season for a 4-0 record. Carolina Bulatovic, Myu Kageyama and Mariya Shumeika are all 4-0 in dual play singles this season. The Mustangs hold a 9-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Islanders, including two straight wins the past two seasons.
