Mustangs Set For Pair Of Road AAC Matches In Florida

SMU women's tennis travels to Florida for a pair of American Athletic Conference road matches during SMU's spring break. The Mustangs play USF in Tampa, Fla. at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12 before facing No. 27 UCF in Orlando, Fla. at noon on Wednesday, March 13.

SMU is 1-1 this season against AAC foes, beating Tulane 7-0 and dropping a close match at Wichita State, 4-3. The Shockers are currently 40th in the latest Oracle/ITA Rankings.

Buss is currently ranked 114th in the nation in singles, and holds a 4-2 record against ranked opponents this season. Shapovalova holds a team-best 12-2 singles record this year, while senior Vivienne Kulicke has a team-high 17 singles wins this season. The doubles team of senior Karina Traxler and junior Tiffany Hollebeck holds a team-best 11-2 record, and has won nine of its last 10 matches.

USF beat Tulane 4-2 on March 3 in its lone AAC match to date. The Bulls most recently played Penn on March 7, falling by a score of 5-2. Senior Ana Roman Dominguez sits at No. 43 in the ITA singles rankings, winning the first two AAC Player of the Week honors of the season. She has a 10-1 singles record during dual play. The Bulls lead the all-time series against SMU 7-2, but the Mustangs won the last meeting in the 2018 AAC quarterfinals 4-2.

UCF is riding an 11-match win streak into Wednesday's match, sitting at No. 27 in the ITA team rankings. The Knights have only dropped two matches this season, both to ranked opponents (No. 15 Florida State, No. 20 Northwestern). They have also notched wins against three other ranked opponents, including No. 23 Tulsa on Jan. 27. Sophomores Valeriya Zeleva and Ksenia Kuznetsova are rated No. 27 and No. 70 in the ITA singles rankings, respectively. The pair also makes up the 18th-ranked doubles team in the nation.

SMU leads the all-time series against UCF 8-4, including a 4-3 win in the 2018 AAC semifinals.
