DALLAS (SMU)
– A late goal from senior Allie Thornton gave [RV] SMU a 1-0 win over [RV] Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams were held scoreless throughout the first half of the match, with each team holding approximately half of the possession time. The Mustangs (6-1-0) had twice as many shots as the Beach (2-5-0) with 10 to their five.

The second half battle saw even more action from SMU, with the Mustangs adding 12 more shots and five on goal. With five minutes left in the match, Thornton put a shot into the back of the net off assists from sophomores Celiana Torres and Courtney Sebazco.

The 85th minute goal was Thornton's third game winner of the season and 10th of her career, which places her tied for fifth in the SMU women's soccer record book.

Six Mustangs had two or more shots throughout the contest. On the other side of the field, SMU's defense held Long Beach State to only one shot on goal, which was saved by freshman Tatum Sutherland.

Next up, SMU travels north to take on Oklahoma and Oklahoma State next Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. CT and Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. CT.
