SMU plays its second straight road game, visiting Houston on Wednesday at 8 p.m. This is the first of two matchups with the Cougars with the return game exactly a month later, Feb. 15, at Moody Coliseum.Â
The Mustangs are 12-3 overall with a 3-2 mark on the road this season following a 71-68 loss at East Carolina on Saturday.Â

KENDRIC 20-20:
Kendric Davis is 54-58 at the FT line this season (93.1%). He made 40 of his first 41, hitting 20 before his first miss, then 20 more before his second miss. He was 11-14 in the game against UCF on Jan. 8, seeting the SMU record for attempts in an AAC game and tying the record for makes in an AAC contest.
SCORING 20-20: In the win over UCF on Jan.8, the Mustangs had two 20-point scorers as
Kendric Davis had 22 and
Feron Hunt had 20 (career high). That was the second straight game with a pair of 20-point performances. In the comeback 92-81 overtime win at Vanderbilt, Davis scored 24 and
Tyson Jolly had 21. That marks the first time for two 20-point scorers in consecutive games since 2015-16 against Nicholls 12/16/15 (W, 86-42; Ben Moore 22,
Shake Milton 20) and Hampton 12/17/15 (W, 105-72; Sterling Brown 23, Jordan Tolbert 20).
LAST GAME (L, 71-68 at East Carolina on Jan. 11): GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Tristen Newton hit a 3-pointer from the left corner in the closing seconds and East Carolina upset SMU 71-68 on Saturday.
Tyson Jolly made two free throws to tie the game with 12 seconds left. Following a timeout, Tremont Robinson-White dribbled the length of the court and as he was challenged at the basket he found Newton for the game winner. Jolly's runner from just inside half court bounced off the front of the rim as time expired. Jayden Gardner scored 20 points for the Pirates (8-8, 2-1 American Athletic Conference), which earned its sixth straight home victory. Newton added 12, Tyrie Jackson 11 and Tremont Robinson-White 10 points. The Pirates were in trouble after the first half, heading into halftime trailing 38-27. Gardner had 14 points in the second half and East Carolina made 7 of 17 3-pointers and shot 50%. Robinson-White scored with 1:50 to play to make it a 3-point game. He then came up with a steal and was fouled. He made the first free throw and missed the second but Gardner grabbed the rebound and made the putback to tie the game at the 1:19 mark. SMU missed a shot and made two free throws with 28.8 seconds to go for a 68-66 lead.
Isiaha Mike had 21 points for the Mustangs (12-3, 2-1), whose four-game winning streak came to end.
Kendric Davis added 13 points and six assists and
Emmanuel Bandoumel had 11 points.
THE SERIES VS. HOUSTON (32-52) (30-52+): The Mustangs are 7-5(+) on-court versus the Cougars in AAC regular-season games with UH taking the past four matchups. SMU swept the 2014-15 and 2016-17 seasons, was swept by UH in 2017-18 and 2018-19. The teams split in 2015-16. The teams spent 21 years together in the Southwest Conference (1975-1996) and eight as C-USA opponents (2005-2013) before moving to The American. Houston held a 28-14 advantage in the SWC and a 12-3 margin in C-USA games. Since joining the American Athletic Conference, SMU leads the series 6-1, with its only loss at Houston. SMU and Houston are tied 6-6 in tournament play, with SMU leading 2-1 in NCAA Tournament play. The Mustangs went 4-3 in SWC Tournament play, before Houston managed a 0-1 record in the C-USA Tournament. Since joining the AAC, Houston is 0-1 in The American Tournament. The two met in the last SWC Tournament at Reunion Arena in Dallas with SMU notching a 62-57 win over the Cougars in 1996. The Ponies won NCAA Regional matchups in 1956 and 1965, but lost in 1967. The eighth-ranked Mustangs won 89-76 over 17th-ranked Houston in the 1956 NCAA Tournament. SMU eventually advanced to the 1956 Final Four. (+30-52 officially, +9-27 officially at Houston).
LAST SEASON VS HOUSTON (L, 90-79 at Houston on March 7): HOUSTON (AP) - Armoni Brooks had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Corey Davis Jr. added 17 points and No. 12 Houston beat SMU 90-79.
Jahmal McMurray had 24 points, and
Ethan Chargois added 21 points for SMU (13-16, 5-12).
Isiaha Mike scored 15 points, and
Feron Hunt had 10 for the Mustangs. They shot 52 percent. SMU had the highest points and field goal percentage allowed by Houston this season. The Cougars (28-2, 15-2) clinched at least a share of The American regular-season title. Brooks made six 3-pointers, Davis had four and the Cougars shot 53 percent overall, going 12 of 29 from behind the arc. Breaon Brady added 16 points, Galen Robinson Jr. had 11, and Houston turned 15 SMU turnovers into 22 points. After SMU opened the second half with
Jarrey Foster's 3-pointer to cut the lead to six, Houston responded with an 11-0 run to up the lead to 57-40 with 17 minutes remaining on seven straight points by Davis. SMU got no closer than nine the rest of the way. Houston used a 21-6 run over an eight-minute span to open up a 27-16 lead. Brooks hit three consecutive 3-pointers to lead the run. The Mustangs were able to keep it close with hot shooting in the first half, hitting 68 percent from the floor, including 7 of 10 on 3-pointers, but Houston's depth was too much for SMU. The Mustangs were 21 of 26 from the free throw line. (L, 69-58 at SMU on Jan. 16) DALLAS (AP) -- Corey Davis Jr. scored 20 points and Armoni Brooks added 19 with five 3-pointers as No. 21 Houston led throughout in a 69-58 win at SMU on Wednesday night. Davis hit a 3-pointer for the game's first points, and the Cougars (17-1, 4-1) jumped out to a 12-4 lead after Brooks made three early 3s. Houston led 31-22 at halftime after Brooks buried a long straightaway 3 just before the break.
Jimmy Whitt Jr. had 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting for SMU (11-6, 3-2), which played most of the game without senior guard
Jarrey Foster (sprained left knee). Davis scored 15 points in the second half, when Houston built a 17-point lead. The Mustangs cut the deficit to nine before Houston worked the shot clock down and Brooks hit a long 3 from the left wing to make it 67-55 with 1:47 left. Fabian White Jr. added 11 points for Houston.

Jahmal McMurray scored 11.
Ethan Chargois had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Mustangs had won nine of their previous 11 games.
UP NEXT: The Mustangs host Temple on Saturday at 7 p.m. SMU plays a second straight home game with ECU visiting Moody Coliseum on Jan. 22. The Mustangs finish the month with road games at Memphis on Jan. 25 and at Cincinnati on Jan. 28.
CALL IT A COMEBACK: SMU rallied from 15 points down (72-57 at 6:28) to win 92-81 in overtime at Vanderbilt on January 4. That ties for the seventh largest comeback in program history and the ties for the largest under Head Coach
Tim Jankovich (80-75 win vs Tulane 2/15/17). SMU closed regulation at Vanderbilt on a 20-5 run to tie the game at 77-all. The Mustangs then had a 15-4 advantage in overtime. SMU still trailed by 10 with less than five minutes left, getting the deficit to 8 points on two
Emmanuel Bandoumel free throws with 4:04 remianing. That makes it one of 30 NCAA D-I comebacks from 10 or more in the final 5 minutes. The Mustangs still trailed by 6 in the final minute when
Tyson Jolly hit a 3 with 28 seconds left to cut it to 77-74.
Kendric Davis stole the inbounds pass and tried to score on a layup. Davis missed and then got the offensive rebounds, passing to
Isiaha Mike outside the top of the key where Mike hit the tying three with 19 seconds remaining to get the game into overtime.Â
TROPHY CASE: Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Mustangs have added seven items to the trophy case. SMU won the 2014-15 and 2016-17 American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. SMU has also won 2019-20 Southwestern Showdown and the 2015-16 Las Vegas Classic. In 2013-14, SMU was the runner-up in the NIT.
HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his fourth  season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 37th season as a collegiate coach, and his 15th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 240-162 (.597) [83-41 at SMU (.669), including 57-14 (.803) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and eight NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015-16, he coached the Mustangs to a 9-0 start as SMU was eventually the last unbeaten team in the country at 18-0, and winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-opening streak.
